Danger

is a small lapse
of attention: a missed
ramp, a left turn
instead of a right,
a closed face, an open
gate, sundown,
a torn map.

At the Spring of Banias

The pagan gods are powerless,
but they still haunt. Water
slips down the face
of the rock. The spring
still flows. The old gods
weep for valleys sown
with mines. They call us,
but their shrines are few
and difficult to find.
